Indian passport ranks as second cheapest worldwide

An Indian passport costs $18.07 for a validity period of 10 years but offers relatively limited visa-free access, permitting travel to only 62 nations without a visa

A recent study conducted by Compare the Market AU, an Australian firm, provided valuable insights into passport affordability and accessibility worldwide. According to the study, the Indian passport ranks as the second cheapest globally, closely following the UAE passport.

When examining the cost per year of validity, the Indian passport emerges as the most economical option, with an expenditure of only $1.81 per year. Notably, obtaining an Indian passport cost $18.07 for a validity period of 10 years, showcasing its cost-effectiveness. However, despite its affordability, the Indian passport offers relatively limited visa-free access, permitting travel to only 62 nations without a visa.

In contrast, the UAE passport takes the top spot for affordability and accessibility, with lower acquisition costs and visa-free access to a larger number of countries. The study also highlights Mexico as having the most expensive passport acquisition process, requiring $231.05 for a 10-year passport, followed closely by Australia at $225.78 for a similar duration. Adrian Taylor, the Executive General Manager of General Insurance at Compare the Market, emphasized the importance of travel insurance in mitigating risks associated with passport-related issues. Surprisingly, countries renowned for their passport power, such as Australia, the USA, and Canada, found themselves ranked lower due to their relatively higher passport fees.

According to the findings, the UAE takes the lead in affordability, with a passport cost of $17.70, valid for 5 years, and providing visa-free entry to 183 countries. India closely follows, with a passport cost of $18.07, valid for 10 years, albeit with access to a smaller number of visa-free countries.
