US cautions China, Russia; AI must not be permitted to control nuclear weapons

US is committed to ensuring that any decision to use nuclear weapons will be made by humans, not artificial intelligence

The United States insists that China and Russia publicly affirm that decisions on nuclear weapon deployment will be made by humans, not by artificial intelligence as reported by Fox News.

Paul Dean, an official from the US State Department’s Bureau of Arms Control, clarified in a media briefing that the US is committed to ensuring that any decision to use nuclear weapons will be made by humans. “We are resolute in our stance that artificial intelligence will not be entrusted with decisions on nuclear weapon use. This principle is shared with our allies in the UK and France,” he stated.

Dean also expressed hope that China and Russia would agree to this principle, which he considers a critical standard for responsible conduct. In a recent meeting in Beijing, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi discussed the security concerns and risks associated with artificial intelligence.

Dean further noted that the US, along with 54 other nations, supports a political declaration for the responsible use of artificial intelligence in military operations. This declaration aims to prevent any lack of accountability in the military use of AI and ensures that AI systems are developed and operated under stringent technical standards, including measures for responsible usage.

In a separate development, Russia recently rejected a UN proposal designed to halt the weaponization of space.

Artificial Intelligence in Military Strategy

CNN has recently reported that the US is examining claims that the Israeli military is using artificial intelligence to select targets for bombing in Gaza.

This investigation comes after an incident where Israeli Defense Forces mistakenly targeted a humanitarian convoy from World Central Kitchen with a drone, leading to the death of seven aid workers. The Israeli military attributed the tragic mistake to an error in target identification.
