Saudi Arabia’s new curriculum to include Ramayana, Mahabharata

As part of Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s new vision for the education sector in Saudi Arabia, Vision 2030, they have introduced Hindu epics, customs, practices and mythology in its curriculum.

As part of the new reforms in the educational system in the country, Saudi online users have shared screenshots of their kids’ social studies tests showing questions related to Hindu culture and religion, including the history of Hinduism, Ramayana, Ayurveda, and Mahabharata, Yoga, and other concepts.

It is reported that students will be taught Ramayana and Mahabharata. It is reported that the study will focus on globally significant Indian cultures such as yoga and Ayurveda, to expand the students’ cultural knowledge and exposure.

A tweet about Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s new vision for the education sector in Saudi Arabia, Vision 2030, involving the history and culture of different countries in the country’s curriculum, has gone viral.

The tweet by Nouf Almarwaai included screenshots of son’s social studies exam with questions about Hinduism, Buddhism and Hindu epics the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Almarwaai was also conferred Padma Shri in 2018 for popularising Yoga in Saudi Arabia.

 The tweet was also appreciated and retweeted by Rajya Sabha MP Dr Vinay Sahasrabuddhe. Nouf, who was born with an autoimmune disease, has been known to play a crucial role in legalising yoga in Saudi Arabia.

Apart from the introduction of Ramayana and Mahabharata in the curriculum of Saudi Arabian students, the English language has been made mandatory in the new Vision 2030.
