‘Our hands are on trigger’: Iran’s warning to Israel over Gaza ground invasion

The looming possibility of a ground invasion of Gaza by Israel has prompted a strong warning from Iran. Tehran has clearly voiced its demand for an immediate cessation of hostilities towards Palestinians. From the Iranian perspective, the United States also deserves a share of the blame for continuously supporting Israel, even in the aftermath of a devastating Hamas attack that resulted in the tragic loss of over 1,400 Israeli lives.
“The hands of all regional parties are ready on the trigger if these Zionist aggressions continue,” warned Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, as reported by news agency Reuters.
Consequences of the relentless bombardment of Gaza include a horrifying toll of more than 2,670 lives, over 700 of whom were children. Severe restrictions were imposed by Israel, cutting off vital supplies of water, electricity, and food to the densely crowded coastal enclave of Gaza. All eyes were on the southern region yesterday when it received a much-needed restoration of its water supply.
In a statement from the Iranian foreign ministry, Amirabdollahian said, “Control over how the situation unfolds or the prevention of an expansion of conflict cannot be guaranteed. Those aiming to limit the war and crisis from spreading further need to halt the ongoing brutal assaults on the innocent citizens and civilians in Gaza.”
However, concern has been voiced across the globe, especially in Washington. US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan highlighted his worries about the possibility of the violence in escalating to greater proportions. There’s also an added risk of Iran, a well-known rival of Israel and known backer of Hamas, stepping into the fray directly.
Meanwhile, Israel has sent soldiers and tanks to its northern border with Lebanon, which is patrolled by the UN. It has also closed a four-kilometer (2.5-mile) wide area to civilians after deadly fire across the border with the Iran-backed Hezbollah group.
