The ‘architect behind Israel attack’ that claimed over 1,200 lives

Deif's whereabouts remain unknown, but he is likely in Gaza, possibly within a complex network of tunnels beneath the region.

In a recent attack by Hamas, Israel likened it to their own “9/11 moment.” The person behind this assault is Mohammed Deif, a Palestinian militant. He referred to it as the “Al Aqsa Flood” in an audio tape. This attack was a response to Israeli raids on Jerusalem’s Al Aqsa mosque, which took place in May 2021. These raids triggered anger among Arab and Muslim communities, as they saw footage of Israeli forces entering the mosque during Ramadan, beating worshippers, and dragging people out.

The Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem has been a longstanding source of tension and conflict over religious and territorial issues. The situation escalated into an 11-day battle between Israel and Hamas.

The recent attack was significant and led to Israel declaring war, launching retaliatory strikes in Gaza, which caused a high number of casualties.

Mohammed Deif, a high-profile Hamas figure, is known for his secrecy. He rarely speaks or appears in public. When he made a statement on Hamas’s TV channel, it signaled something major was happening. There are only a few images of him, all of which are not very clear.

Deif’s whereabouts remain unknown, but he is likely in Gaza, possibly within a complex network of tunnels beneath the region. Israeli security sources believe he was directly involved in planning and executing the attack.

The decision to launch the attack was made by Deif and Yehya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas in Gaza, working together. However, Deif is considered the mastermind behind the operation.

This operation was shrouded in secrecy, even from Iran, a significant source of support for Hamas. Iran was aware that a major operation was being planned but did not have detailed information about the timing or specifics of the attack.

Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei denied any involvement in the attack, and the United States had no evidence of direct Iranian participation.

The plan was built on deception, with Israel led to believe that Hamas was focused on economic development in Gaza while secretly training its fighters.

Deif’s statement in the recording emphasized that Hamas had repeatedly warned Israel to stop its actions against Palestinians, release prisoners, and halt land expropriation. He highlighted ongoing Israeli raids in the West Bank and the construction of settlements.

For over a year, there has been turmoil in the West Bank, an area central to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since 1967.

Mohammed Deif, born as Mohammad Masri, grew up in a refugee camp. He joined Hamas during the first Intifada in 1987. He studied science and the arts at the Islamic University in Gaza, eventually rising through Hamas’s ranks.

Deif’s focus on developing tunnels and bomb-making capabilities made him a top target on Israel’s most wanted list. Several assassination attempts have left him with injuries and personal loss, including the death of his wife and children in a 2014 airstrike.

Despite these challenges, Deif remains an elusive and shadowy figure, avoiding modern technology and staying hidden from the public eye.
