UN Leaders applaud India as South-South Cooperation champion, acknowledge ‘exemplary leadership’ in tackling global challenges

Top leaders and envoys at the United Nations have praised India for its exemplary leadership in addressing global challenges and championing South-South cooperation. The commendations come as India concludes its year-long G20 Presidency, with the baton set to be handed over to Brazil.

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed emphasized India’s longstanding commitment to South- cooperation and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She highlighted India’s philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ – viewing the world as one interconnected family. Mohammed commended the India-UN Development Partnership Fund as a testament to the extraordinary accomplishments possible when nations unite.

India’s Role in South-South Cooperation

Since its launch in 2017, the India-UN Development Partnership Fund has supported 76 projects in 54 countries. The President of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, Dennis Francis, acknowledged this as a significant achievement, particularly amid global challenges such as the pandemic. He emphasized the Fund’s ability to channel resources to where they are needed most, with a strong focus on Small Island Developing States and Least Developed Countries.

India’s Global Leadership and G20 Presidency

President Dennis Francis lauded India’s historical milestone during its G20 Presidency, welcoming the African Union as a permanent member. This move signaled India’s commitment to solidarity and fairness in global economic governance. He highlighted India’s role as a strong voice in multilateral affairs, especially during the pandemic, and its contribution to creating a more just and equitable world.

With one-sixth of humanity residing in India, the country plays an unparalleled role in the global mission for justice and equity. India’s legacy includes championing democracy, promoting women-led development, and leading to the adoption of the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs. The enduring partnership between India and the UN serves as a guiding light within the Global South, fostering just and inclusive development.

India-UN Development Partnership Fund’s Impact

Managed by the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation and implemented by 12 UN entities, the $150 million Fund supports sustainable development projects globally. The Fund operates across the Global South, prioritizing Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, highlighted the Fund’s diverse projects in health, education, and environmental sustainability as a testament to India’s commitment to multi-dimensional development.

India’s Development Partnerships

Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj emphasized India’s commitment to leaving no one behind, citing a decade of development partnerships reaching 78 nations through 600 projects. India’s humanitarian assistance, spanning from Afghanistan to Ukraine and Gaza to Nepal, showcases its global solidarity. Kamboj underscored India’s leadership and advocacy for the Global South, representing the hopes and challenges of developing countries in a dynamically shifting global landscape.

Launch of India-UN Development Partnership Fund Annual Report

On this occasion, the India-UN Development Partnership Fund Annual Report was launched. Envoys and representatives from Dominica, El Salvador, Morocco, Cameroon, Nicaragua, Senegal, Fiji, Tuvalu, Togo, and Tonga shared their national experiences and development projects undertaken through the Fund.
