AI dialogue between US and India should be intensified: US Ambassador

He emphasised the need for Washington and New Delhi to have more in-depth conversations around artificial intelligence (AI).

In his powerful argument for “deeper conversations” between Washington and New Delhi on an artificial intelligence regulatory framework on Monday, US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti said that the two democracies might have a “multiplicative relationship” in this regard.

During an interactive discussion hosted by the Observer Research Foundation, Garcetti emphasised that in order to prevent disastrous outcomes, humans must “get in front” of artificial intelligence (AI).

He made it plain that although there had been in-depth discussions about the matter with India, neither country had yet to submit a formal proposal.

US President Joe Biden had made forceful remarks on the subject, Garcetti said.

President Biden signed an executive order last month requiring AI makers to give the federal government an evaluation of how vulnerable their apps are to cyberattacks, as well as the data used to test and train the AI and monitor its effectiveness.

“If we don’t get in front of AI, the consequences, even if it is a small percentage of likelihood, of something catastrophic happening with our official intelligence could be sooner than we believe,” Garcetti stated.

The recent 2+2 dialogue between the US and India

Regarding the recent 2+2 dialogue between the United States and India, Garcetti stated that both countries made significant progress in fortifying their long-standing major military alliance and accelerating the pace of growth observed in programmes like the US-India roadmap for defence and industrial cooperation.

He made a case for US-India cooperation and cooperation in developing fields.

“…we sometimes just focus on weapons and what is being sold, or potentially co-developed, but the operational level of our militaries…is as critical as any equipment,” he stated.

He furthermore suggested that the nations “discuss ways to deepen our science and our technology partnerships to harness technology for the global good instead of technology that harms us and divides us.” He emphasised the need for Washington and New Delhi to have more in-depth conversations around artificial intelligence (AI).

Through the QUAD and other metrics, global challenges, the US ambassador said that the joint statement released during the 2+2 Dialogue represented the determination of the US and India to support robust rules-based international order to defend free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific.
