Apple warns its users against sleeping next to a charging Iphone

Keep your iPhone, the power adapter, and any wireless charger in a well-ventilated area when in use or charging.

Tech giant Apple has released a PSA warning for its iPhone users against putting their phones on charging and sleeping next to them. According to Apple, while, waking up to your iPhone fully charged next to you might be an attractive prospect, it is hazardous.

Apple’s PSA revealed that taking the far bigger risk of charging your phone as you sleep could ‘result in fire, electric shock, injury, or damage to iPhone or other property’. Falling asleep with your phone in your hand is an even bigger no-no if it involves leaving it ‘under a blanket, pillow, or your body’. Apparently, the big problem is airflow as the charger should be in a ‘well-ventilated area when in use or charging’ to avoid overheating and nix the fire risk.

The main message directly from Apple says, “Don’t sleep on a device, power adapter, or wireless charger, or place them under a blanket, pillow, or your body, when it’s connected to a power source.” “Keep your iPhone, the power adapter, and any wireless charger in a well-ventilated area when in use or charging.” “Take special care if you have a physical condition that affects your ability to detect heat against the body.”

However, this is not the only piece of advice that Apple gave. Apple also provided safe-charging advice which includes using the charging cable that comes with the phone or purchasing an Apple USB power adapter separately. According to them, it is important to use cables and power adapters that comply with USB 2.0 or better as they meet international safety standards and are much safer than the cheap non-compliant cables and power adapters which can in extreme cases cause death and injury.

To further prevent potential hazards, Apple advises charging the phone face up, using undamaged cables and chargers, avoiding moisture, and ensuring metallic cases or foreign objects do not come into contact with the charger. Besides the safety concerns, another reason to keep phones out of the bedrooms is that the blue light emitted by the phones inhibits the release of melatonin, a chemical essential for falling asleep. Additionally, having the phone nearby can keep the brain stimulated, making it harder to stay asleep.
