Manchester City’s maiden UCL triumph seals a magnificent treble
They defeated Inter Milan, 1-0 to win their first ever European title.
Premier League giants, Manchester City, have won their first-ever European title in the club’s history as they defeated Serie A side, Inter Milan, in the UCL final played at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium, Istanbul. They have also become only the second English team ever to complete the continental treble, after Manchester United, 1998-99.
The continental treble consists of the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the Champions League.
Spanish midfielder, Rodri, gave them the lead in the 68th minute after finishing off a loose ball in the Milan box. It proved to be enough as City saw the game off. Inter’s Lukaku had a glorious opportunity to equalize the game in the dying moments from close range, but he somehow hit his shot straight at the goalkeeper. He also blocked Inter’s potential equalizer in the 70th minute.
Manchester City, won the Premier League for the third time in a row this season, but always fell short in the prestigious European tournament. After signing Erling Haaland earlier this season, Pep Guardiola showed his intent toward winning the coveted trophy with City this season.
His signing paid off as the Norwegian goal-machine scored 12 goals in 11 European games and had 44 goal contributions in 35 games in the Premier League, winning the Player of the Season and the Young Player of the Season whilst being the top scorer in the domestic league.
This win also cements City in the history books as they match the legacy of their bitter rivals, Manchester United, who were the only club in England before City to have won the historic treble. City remained unbeaten during the course of the whole tournament.
This was Pep Guardiola’s 3rd UCL win after winning it twice at Barcelona in 2008-09 and 2010-11.
