Djokovic creates history by winning his 23rd Grand Slam

He defeated Casper Ruud in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Novak Djokovic, widely regarded as one of the best players of the Open Era, has defeated Casper Ruud to win his 3rd French Open and his 23rd overall Grand Slam, making him the player with the most number of men’s singles titles, overtaking Rafael Nadal who has won 22 Grand Slams and cementing his legacy as possibly the greatest ever to play the game.

The current world number 3 defeated 24-year-old Casper Ruud, in straight sets 7-6, 6-3, 7-5, in the final which was held at the prestigious Phillippe Chatrier Court. This victory makes him the only player to have won every Grand Slam at least 3 times.

He also reclaimed the world’s number 1 ranking that he has held for more weeks (387) than anyone in history. With this win, Djokovic is halfway toward a calendar Grand Slam after he claimed the Australian Open back in January.

In the women’s final, on the other hand, Iga Swiatek defeated world number 43 Karolina Muchova to claim her 3rd French Open title. She also became the first woman to defend the title in 16 years.

The 22-year-old Polish player, who is ranked world number 1, won a grueling match that went on for more than 3 hours 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. This was her 4th career Grand Slam having won the French Open on two previous occasions along with a US Open.

Swiatek, who is a big Rafael Nadal fan, matched her idol’s legacy as both of them won their fourth slam title within a few days of their 22nd birthday.
