LPG prices on the rise: Govt announces hike in commercial cylinder rates

This marks the second price hike for commercial LPG cylinders in just the past two months, and the new prices will come into effect from November 1.

Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) in India have recently implemented a price increase of ₹100 for commercial LPG cylinders in various locations across the country. Notably, this marks the second price hike for commercial LPG cylinders in just the past two months, and the new prices will come into effect from November 1.

In contrast, the cost of domestic cylinders, primarily used for cooking in households, has remained steady and unchanged. This stability in domestic LPG prices offers relief to households relying on this fuel source for their daily cooking needs.

Following the most recent price adjustment, the cost of a 19 kg commercial cylinder stands at ₹1,833 in Delhi. Prices in other major cities are as follows: ₹1,943 in Kolkata, ₹1,785 in Mumbai, ₹1,914.50 in Bengaluru, and ₹1,999.50 in Chennai. These variations illustrate that prices can differ depending on the location.

For households, the prices of domestic LPG cylinders are as follows: ₹929 in Kolkata, ₹902.5 in Mumbai, ₹918.5 in Chennai. In Delhi, a 14.2-kg domestic cylinder remains priced at ₹903. These stable prices for domestic LPG provide assurance to consumers.

On October 4, the Union cabinet approved a significant increase in the cooking gas subsidy. The subsidy has been raised from ₹200 to ₹300 per cylinder for approximately 96 million low-income households. This decision coincided with the approaching assembly elections in five states and national elections scheduled for the following year.

The government’s move to provide extra subsidies, particularly targeting rural women, comes shortly after its approval to expand the PM Ujjwala Yojana scheme. The expansion aims to reach an additional 7.5 million women, part of a broader effort to increase the total number of beneficiaries to 103.5 million within the next three years. This demonstrates the government’s commitment to providing LPG access to more rural households, especially women.

On August 29, the Union Cabinet took a step to reduce the financial burden by lowering the price of a 14.2 kg LPG cooking gas cylinder by ₹200. This move was made as a gesture ahead of Raksha Bandhan, a festival celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters. It was also seen as a response to mounting criticism over rising inflation, providing some relief to consumers.
