Indian Army holds counter-terrorism exercise with Mongolia ‘Nomadic Elephant 2023’

The exercise aims to enhance military relations and focus on counter-terrorism in mountainous terrain.

An Indian Army contingent of 43 personnel left for Mongolia to take part in the India-Mongolia joint military exercise ‘Nomadic Elephant 2023’. This will be the 15th edition of the exercise which will take place from July 17-July 31 at Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

 The exercise ‘Nomadic Elephant’ is an annual training event between India and Mongolia, which is conducted alternatively in the two countries. The last exercise took place at Special Forces Training School, Bakloh, in October 2019.

Soldiers of the Mongolian Armed Forces Unit 084 and Indian Army jawans from the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment are participating in the exercise.

According to the release by the Ministry of Defence, the exercise focuses on building positive military relations, exchange best practices, bonhomie and inter-operability between the two armies. The release from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) added, that the exercise will primarily focus on counter-terrorism operations in mountainous terrain under a United Nations mandate.

The scope of this exercise includes Platoon level Field Training Exercise, during which both the Indian and Mongolian will engage in various training exercises to enhance their skill and capabilities. These activities include endurance training, reflex firing, room intervention, small team tactics and rock craft training. Soldiers from both sides will learn from each other’s operational experience.

The exercise signifies the Indian and Mongolian commitment to regional security and cooperation which will contribute to the strengthening of the bilateral ties of the participating countries of ‘Nomadic Elephant 2023’, i.e.India and Mongolia.
