Govt unveils AI chatbot for PM-Kisan Scheme to assist farmers

From providing consumers with quick and precise responses to their questions about the PM-KISAN programme, to weather reports, soil conditions, and bank payments the AI Chatbot will act as a thorough guide.

By launching an AI Chatbot for the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) Scheme, the Union Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Government of India, made great progress in improving the welfare of farmers. The government’s dedication to using technology to enhance the lives of farmers nationwide was highlighted in the virtual launch event, which was hosted in New Delhi.

The introduction of the AI Chatbot intends to improve the PM-KISAN program’s efficiency while giving farmers quick, understandable, and accurate answers to their inquiries. Kailash Choudhary, the Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, who officially launched the AI Chatbot, emphasised how well it fits with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of transforming the agricultural landscape through technology-driven government.

What benefits will the AI chatbot provide?

The AI Chatbot, according to Choudhary, would be a useful tool for getting scheme information and resolving complaints. He emphasised the necessity of extending its offerings to cover relevant topics including weather reports, soil conditions, and bank payments. The minister praised the Ministry staff for promptly implementing this technology, which is anticipated to lighten the workload of agriculture officials at both the federal and state levels.

The presence of officials from the Indian government and state governments at the virtual event underlined the significance of this turning point for the agricultural industry. The successful rollout of the AI Chatbot for the PM-KISAN programme highlights the government’s commitment to leveraging technological breakthroughs for the benefit of farmers.

The Department of Agriculture and Family Welfare’s Secretary, Manoj Ahuja, revealed plans to integrate the AI chatbot in the Ministry’s other significant programmes over the next few months. A thorough explanation of the Chatbot’s capabilities and possible advantages for farmers was given by Pramod Mehreda, Additional Secretary of the Department of Agriculture & Family Welfare.

By providing consumers with quick and precise responses to their questions about the PM-KISAN programme, the AI Chatbot acts as a thorough guide. Notably, this is the first AI chatbot to be incorporated with a significant flagship programme of the Union government. The assistance of the EKstep foundation and Bhashini allowed for its establishment and advancement.

The AI Chatbot is connected with Bhashini and accessible through the PM KISAN mobile app, offering multilingual support to accommodate the linguistic and regional diversity of PM KISAN recipients. The incorporation of cutting-edge technology is anticipated to increase transparency and give farmers the power to make wise decisions.

The Chatbot, which is currently accessible in English, Hindi, Bengali, Odia, and Tamil, will soon be available in all 22 official languages of the nation, making it even more inclusive and available to farmers all over the country.

The PM-KISAN Scheme

In order to meet the financial needs of Indian land-holding farmers, the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi

(PM-KISAN) government  programme was introduced in February 2019. The programme provides eligible farmer households with a yearly financial benefit of Rs 6,000 in three equal payments through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism. One of the largest DBT programmes worldwide, it has distributed approximately Rs. 2.61 Lakhs Crores to more than 11 Crore farmers since its beginning. Families of landholder farmers with cultivable land all around the nation have received critical income support thanks to the PM-KISAN programme. The direct benefit transfer component of the programme has made it possible for millions of farmers, including female recipients, to receive timely financial assistance, enhancing their socioeconomic well-being.

More than Rs. 1.75 lakh crore was transferred to recipients during the Covid Pandemic, which was a big assistance to farmers and their families during difficult times.

The Indian government has also created a smartphone application that has a facial authentication-based e-KYC capability. This app is the first mobile app to deploy an e-KYC feature based on facial authentication in a government benefit programme. The Google Play store makes it simple to download this mobile app, which is also quite simple to use. With the use of this software, a farmer may now complete his e-KYC from the comfort of his home, even in distant corners of the nation, without using an OTP or fingerprints, only by having his face scanned.

Additionally, they may help 100 additional farmers in their community complete e-KYC right at their door with their help. The Indian government has also given state government personnel the option to conduct e-KYC on 500 farmers, extending this capability to all government officials.
