For the first time, Gurez Valley in Kashmir is now linked to electricity grid

The electrification is not just about lights; it symbolizes a new era for the residents, filled with possibilities and opportunities.

The Gurez sector in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district has achieved a significant milestone, experiencing the joy of connecting to the electricity grid for the first time since India gained Independence. This development brings newfound happiness to the residents of this frontier area.

Known for its enchanting landscape, the Gurez Valley has become a thriving adventure hub in Kashmir during the summer season, providing a source of livelihood for the local civilians. What adds to the jubilation is that this frontier sector, which previously relied on diesel generators for electricity, has now been seamlessly integrated into the electricity grid.

Winter brings heavy snowfall, leading to the closure of the area for several months. Overcoming this challenge, the project involved the installation of approximately 180 kilometers of 150 mm sq conductor, 1950 street poles, and 4 kilometers of underground cabling across the tough terrain, including the daunting Razdhan Pass at an elevation of 12,672 feet above sea level.

Expressing their gratitude, the people of Gurez attribute this achievement to the collective efforts of leaders like Prime Minister Modi, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, the Deputy Commissioner of Bandipora, and the Power Development Department. A local resident shared, “We used to get limited electricity here, but now we believe there will be an overall improvement.”

The elation is evident among the residents, with another local expressing that the provision of electricity has been a longstanding demand in the valley. He thanked the LG and the administration for fulfilling this demand and remarked that many promises had been made over time.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha acknowledged the historic significance of the day, emphasizing that this move would benefit 1500 consumers, and plans are underway to connect all the villages in a phased manner. The electrification is not just about lights; it symbolizes a new era for the residents, filled with possibilities and opportunities.

As the Gurez Valley illuminated with electric lights for the first time, it marked not only the arrival of electricity but also the beginning of a transformative period for the residents. Mohammad Ismail, a local trade leader, expressed overwhelming gratitude, stating, “We are thankful to the government. We expect them to do more for us in the future.”

In a released statement, the Jammu and Kashmir government highlighted the diligent efforts of the district team, including the STD division, in completing the work within a strict timeline. The successful trial of the 60 KM 33 KV transmission line further underlines the dedication involved in this crucial project.

The impact of this initiative extends beyond the joy of the immediate moment. The move is set to benefit 1500 consumers in the first phase, promising a significant improvement in the daily lives of the residents. As the lights shine in Gurez Valley, they not only dispel darkness but also signify progress, development, and a commitment to uplifting the quality of life in this frontier area.
