Bangladesh is building memorial to honour Indian warriors of the 1971 war

Approximately 1,600 Indian soldiers lost their lives in the fight; their names will be included in this moving tribute.

A landmark memorial dedicated to remembering the Indian soldiers who gave their lives in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War is nearing completion at Ashuganj, Bangladesh. Approximately 1,600 Indian soldiers lost their lives in the fight; their names will be included in this moving tribute. The memorial is anticipated to be completed by December, with the two countries’ prime ministers set to inaugurate it in March or April.

This upcoming memorial would be the first in Bangladesh solely devoted to honouring the Indian soldiers who were instrumental in the 1971 war, making it a momentous and historic occasion. In March 2021, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi lay the foundation stone for the memorial, which is located in Ashuganj, Brahmanbaria.

A turning point in South Asian history, the Liberation War of 1971 resulted in Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan. Indian soldiers were a major factor in the fighting and helped Bangladesh in its struggle for independence. The memorial will serve as a testament to the unshakable solidarity and sacrifice of these courageous Indian troops, serving as a symbol of thanksgiving and memory.

An important step has been taken in deepening the historical and cultural links between Bangladesh and India with the completion of the memorial. It strengthens the two countries’ diplomatic and bilateral ties by serving as a reminder of their enduring friendship and shared history.
