The winners were announced at the Swacch Survekshan Awards 2023 by President Droupadi Murmu

Another year, another cleanest city award for Indore as Madhya Pradesh’s financial capital was named as the nation’s cleanest city for the seventh time in a row along with first time winners Surat, who were named joint winners at the Swacch Survekshan Awards 2023 by President of India, Droupadi Murmu which was held at the Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre in New Delhi on Thursday 11th January. The winners are decided on the basis of a survey conducted by the Union government under the Swacch Bharat Mission.

At the awards, Maharashtra was declared the cleanest, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh with Maharashtra’s Navi Mumbai being named the third cleanest city. In cities with less than 1 lakh population, Maharshtra’s Saswat was ranked at one, followed by Chhattisgarh’s Patan and again, Maharashtra’s Lonavala. Varanasi was recognised as the best Ganga town.

Just like the previous year Indore, Surat and Navi Mumbai managed to hold on to their top 3 ratings with the only difference being Surat named as the joint winner this year. Vishakhapatnam also retained its rating as the fourth cleanest city from the previous year. Meanwhile, Bhopal and Vijayawada exchanged their positions this year with Bhopal being ranked fifth and Vijayawada being sixth. It is also important to note that Indore was also recently named as the Best Smart City in the latest edition of the Smart Cities Mission Awards.

The Swacch Survekshan has emerged as a game changer in developing urban landscapes since the past few years. The Survekshan has also seen unprecedented public feedback as this year’s survekshan in 4,177 cities saw 12 crores entries from the public compared to the nine crore entries from last year.
