India Achieves Success in Flight Testing New-Generation AKASH Missile

India achieved a significant milestone on Friday with the successful flight test of the new generation AKASH missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha. The Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted the test against a high-speed unmanned aerial target flying at a very low altitude. Importantly, the missile system demonstrated its capability by intercepting and destroying the target during the test.

The success of the flight test holds paramount importance as it validates the functionality of the entire AKASH missile system. This comprehensive system includes the missile itself, featuring an indigenously developed Radio Frequency Seeker, the Launcher, Multi-Function Radar, and the Command, Control & Communication system. This successful validation marks a crucial step in ensuring the readiness and reliability of the AKASH missile system in real-world scenarios.

During the test, the performance of the system was thoroughly examined, and its effectiveness was confirmed through the data collected by numerous radars, telemetry, and electro-optical tracking systems deployed by the ITR in Chandipur. This meticulous assessment further reinforces the credibility of the AKASH missile system, indicating its capability to function seamlessly in diverse conditions.

The flight test was not only a technological triumph but also a collaborative effort witnessed by senior officials from DRDO, the Indian Air Force (IAF), Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). Their presence underscores the joint commitment of various organizations involved in the development and deployment of the AKASH-NG system. Dr. Samir V Kamat, the Secretary of the Department of Defence Research and Development and Chairman of DRDO, also expressed his congratulations to the teams involved in the successful flight test. This acknowledgment from the top leadership acknowledges the dedication and hard work put in by the scientific and technical teams responsible for the AKASH missile system’s development.
