Hyderabad man passes away during “smile-enhancement” surgery weeks before wedding

The deceased's father, Ramulu Vinjam, has alleged that his son died due to an overdose of anesthesia administered during the surgical procedure

In a tragic incident that shook Hyderabad last week, a 28-year-old man named Laxmi Narayana Vinjam lost his life while undergoing dental surgery aimed at enhancing his smile ahead of his impending wedding. The surgery, known as ‘smile enhancement’, took place at the FMS International Dental Clinic located in the upscale area of Jubilee Hills in Hyderabad. The incident occurred on February 16, leaving Laxmi Narayana’s family devastated and questioning the circumstances surrounding his untimely demise.

The deceased’s father, Ramulu Vinjam, has alleged that his son died due to an overdose of anesthesia administered during the surgical procedure. According to Ramulu Vinjam, his son collapsed during the surgery, prompting the clinic staff to urgently summon him to the clinic. Despite rushing Laxmi Narayana to a nearby hospital, his life could not be saved, and he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Ramulu Vinjam expressed shock and disbelief over the turn of events, stating that his son had not disclosed his plans for the surgery, and as far as he knew, Laxmi Narayana had no underlying health conditions. Consequently, he holds the clinic and its medical staff responsible for his son’s tragic demise.

Providing further details on the sequence of events, K Venkateshwar Reddy, the Station House Officer at Jubilee Hills, revealed that Laxmi Narayana arrived at the dental clinic around 2:30 pm on the fateful day. The surgical procedure commenced approximately two hours later and lasted for nearly two hours. By 7 pm, the clinic contacted Laxmi Narayana’s family, informing them of the critical situation. Subsequently, he was rushed to Apollo Hospital in Jubilee Hills, where his death was confirmed. The authorities have taken cognizance of the matter and initiated an investigation, including conducting an autopsy on Laxmi Narayana’s body to ascertain the exact cause of death.

The tragedy struck at a particularly joyous time for Laxmi Narayana, who had recently gotten engaged and was eagerly looking forward to his upcoming wedding, scheduled to take place next month. However, the promising future ahead of him was abruptly cut short, leaving his family and loved ones grappling with immense grief and disbelief. In response to the family’s allegations of negligence, a case has been filed against the dental clinic, and officials are diligently scrutinizing hospital records and security camera footage to uncover any lapses or irregularities that may have contributed to the tragic outcome.

Meanwhile, FMS International Dental Clinic, where the ill-fated surgery took place, has come under scrutiny in the wake of the incident. The clinic, which claims to be one of the most awarded dental clinics in India since 2017, with over 55 prestigious accolades to its credit, now finds itself embroiled in a legal and ethical quagmire. The allegations of negligence and the subsequent investigation have cast a shadow over its reputation and raised pertinent questions regarding patient safety and medical protocols followed during surgical procedures.

The sudden and unexpected loss of Laxmi Narayana Vinjam serves as a grim reminder of the risks associated with medical procedures, even seemingly routine ones such as dental surgery. It underscores the importance of stringent adherence to safety protocols, thorough patient evaluation, and transparent communication between healthcare providers and patients. As the investigation unfolds and more details come to light, it is imperative that justice is served, and measures are implemented to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
