Mumbai traffic police introduces ‘No Honking Day’ to combat noise pollution

Mumbai police's traffic control branch declares 'No Honking Day' on June 14 to alleviate noise pollution.

To combat the escalating problem of noise pollution and mitigate its negative effects on public health, the Traffic Control Branch of Mumbai Police has made a significant announcement. A designated ‘No Honking Day’ will be observed on Wednesday, June 14, aimed at curbing the unnecessary and incessant honking by motorists across the city.

Citing the adverse impact of unnecessary honking on the environment and human well-being, a high-ranking police official urged motorists to actively participate in the initiative by refraining from honking their vehicle horns. This initiative aligns with the Mumbai Traffic Police’s recommendation for motorists to ensure that their vehicle horns comply with Rule 119 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989.

The police authorities have also issued a stern warning, stating that legal action will be taken against individuals found guilty of indulging in unwarranted and excessive blaring of their vehicle horns, following the Motor Vehicles Act and the Environment Protection Act of 1986. The ‘No Honking Day’ initiative encompasses all drivers and riders within Mumbai, excluding emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire brigades, who are urged to join the cause and abstain from honking not only on June 14 but also on other days.

Research conducted by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) states the key role of honking in contributing to overall traffic noise. Dr. Ritesh Vijay, a senior principal scientist at NEERI, conducted an extensive study revealing the significant impact of honking on noise pollution levels. Additionally, a 2018 report by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) quantified noise levels in major Indian cities, including Mumbai, exceeding 80 decibels, signifying an urgent need for effective intervention measures.

The ‘No Honking Day’ initiative serves as a call for residents of Mumbai to recognize the importance of reducing noise pollution and protecting public health. By promoting a collective sense of responsibility and encouraging mindful driving practices, Mumbai Police aims to create a safer, quieter, and more harmonious urban environment for all residents.

As the city gears up for this impactful initiative, all eyes are on Mumbai Police and its collaborative efforts to promote a culture of silence on the roads, instilling a renewed sense of well-being within the bustling metropolis.
