Relive the magic of Ramanand Sagar’s ‘Ramayan’: Show returns to television screens

Iconic mythological show rerun amidst comparisons with 'Adipurush'.

Ramanand Sagar’s beloved Hindi TV show, Ramayan, is set to make a comeback on the small screen for fans to relive its magic. Shemaroo TV has confirmed that the legendary mythological series will be aired again starting from July 3, at 7:30 PM on the channel.

In an announcement shared on their social media platforms, Shemaroo TV posted a short clip from the show and expressed excitement, stating, “World-famous mythological serial Ramayan is back for all the fans and our audience. Watch it from July 3, 7.30 pm, on your favorite channel Shemaroo TV.” The post also provided the channel numbers for various digital TV service providers, ensuring easy access for viewers.

This news of the show’s rerun comes at a time when Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan is being compared to the recently released film, Adipurush. Adipurush, based on the Hindu epic Ramayana, has faced criticism for its alleged misrepresentation of the lead characters, such as Ram, Sita, Hanuman, and Ravan. Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, Devdatta Nage, and Saif Ali Khan portray these iconic roles in the movie.

In the original ’80s TV show, Arun Govil and Dipika Chikhlia portrayed the titular roles of Ram and Sita, while Sunil Lahiri played the character of Lakshman.

When Shemaroo TV initially announced the rerun of Ramayan, fans flooded the comment section expressing their enthusiasm and viewing it as a remedy for the “virus of Adipurush.” One fan wrote, “Wow, this will chuck out the virus of Adipurush.” However, some viewers also requested the channel to consider airing Ramayan at a different time and expressed their desire for reruns of other beloved TV serials.

During the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic, there was a widespread demand for the re-telecast of Ramayan, leading the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to bring back the mythological series on Doordarshan. Ramayan, which originally aired from 1987 to 1988, received an official re-run on Doordarshan due to public demand during the COVID-19 lockdown period.
