Japan offers tourist e-Visas for Indians; here’s how to apply

The Japan eVisa is a short-term visa for tourists, and it lets you stay in Japan for up to 90 days. However, it's only valid for one entry into Japan

Japan has announced a significant development in the country’s visa application process, which will benefit Indian tourists and foreign nationals residing in India. Effective from April 1, 2024, eligible individuals will be able to apply for an electronic visa (e-Visa) to facilitate their travel to the country. This new measure seeks to eliminate the need for physical visa stickers while simultaneously streamlining and expediting the visa application process.

The eVisa program in Japan is designed to offer a single-entry, short-term visa specifically for tourists. Once the eVisa is granted, travelers can stay in Japan, often referred to as the Land of the Rising Sun, for up to 90 days.

The era of waiting in line for physical visa stickers is over. The introduction of the eVisa system has made the process more streamlined, enabling individuals to apply for visas electronically via Japan Visa Application Centers managed by VFS Global.

  • Who can get it: Indian citizens and foreign nationals living in India can apply for the Japan eVisa.
  • What it allows: The Japan eVisa is a short-term visa for tourists, and it lets you stay in Japan for up to 90 days. However, it’s only valid for one entry into Japan. This means that if you leave Japan during your stay, you won’t be able to re-enter using the same visa.

How to apply for Japan eVisa

The application procedure remains largely unchanged. Applications are submitted through the Japan Visa Application Centers managed by VFS Global. However, instead of a traditional visa sticker, successful applicants will receive an electronic visa.

Successful applicants will receive an electronic visa instead of a traditional visa sticker. Upon arrival at the airport, travelers must display a “visa issuance notice” on their smartphones, requiring internet access.

  • Check-in Procedure: Travelers must show the “visa issuance notice” on their device when checking in at the airport.
  • Receiving the Notice: Travel agencies will supply a “Visa Issuance Notice” with a two-dimensional barcode, available in printed or PDF format.
  • Showing the Notice: Travelers can display the electronic “visa issuance notice” by scanning the barcode with their device and entering the necessary information. A countdown timer shows the notice’s validity.

Advantages of the Japan eVisa Program include a quicker and more user-friendly application procedure, no waiting for a physical visa to arrive by mail, and environmental friendliness. If you’re planning a Japanese adventure, the launch of eVisas has made it easier than ever for Indian travelers to visit Japan. Japan offers a memorable travel experience with its rich cultural heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and bustling cities. So, it’s time to plan your dream vacation and prepare to discover the marvels of Japan!
