Prime Minister Narendra Modi receives ‘Order of the Nile’ award in Cairo

Egyptian President confers Egypt's highest state honor on PM Modi during historic bilateral visit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was bestowed with the prestigious ‘Order of the Nile’ award by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in a ceremony held in Cairo. This recognition marks Egypt’s highest state honor, symbolizing the strengthening strategic partnership between the two nations.

The ‘Order of the Nile’ is an esteemed accolade crafted in pure gold. It features three square gold units adorned with Pharaonic symbols. Each unit represents a significant aspect: protection of the state against evils, prosperity brought by the Nile, and wealth and endurance. The units are connected by a circular gold flower embellished with turquoise and ruby. The collar also includes a hexagonal pendant showcasing Pharaonic-style flowers and gems.

Established in 1915 by Sultan Hussein Kamel of Egypt, the Order of the Nile acknowledges individuals who have rendered valuable service to the country. While it initially served as one of the Kingdom of Egypt’s principal orders, it was reconstituted as Egypt’s highest state honor after the country became a republic in 1953.

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi explored the historic Al-Hakim Mosque in Cairo, an 11th-century architectural marvel that has been restored with the assistance of India’s Dawoodi Bohra community. The mosque, completed three months ago, covers an expansive area of 13,560 square meters, with its central courtyard spanning 5,000 square meters. It holds great cultural significance as the fourth oldest mosque in Cairo and the second Fatimid mosque in the Egyptian capital.

This visit marks a significant milestone in the bilateral relations between India and Egypt, following President El-Sisi’s presence as the Chief Guest at India’s Republic Day celebrations in January. Prime Minister Modi’s recognition with the ‘Order of the Nile’ further deepens the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two nations.

In addition to the ‘Order of the Nile,’ Prime Minister Modi has previously been honored with distinguished awards such as the Grand Collar of the State of Palestine, the State Order of Ghazi Amir Amanullah Khan of Afghanistan, the Order of Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia (awarded to non-Muslim dignitaries), and the Order of Zayed Award of the United Arab Emirates.

The recognition of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the ‘Order of the Nile’ underscores his contributions to fostering international cooperation and diplomatic ties, promoting peace, and strengthening India’s global standing.
