Elon Musk’s ‘X’ to get video and voice calling features

The announcement comes after 'X' launched a LinkedIn-like hiring feature for organizations on the platform.

Elon Musk announced that his social media platform ‘X,’ formerly known as Twitter, will soon introduce video and audio calling features. In a ‘X’ post , Musk said that video and voice calls will be available on iOS, Android, Mac and PC devices.

No Phone Number Required for Calls

Musk highlighted that users will not need a phone number to make voice and video calls on ‘X.’ This positions the platform as an effective global address book for seamless communication.

Timeline for Launch Remains Unclear

While confirming that video calling capabilities are in the works, Musk did not specify an exact release date. He simply stated that the feature will be launched soon.

Musk said that video/audio calls on the platform will not be end-to-end encrypted initially, but the ability for users to turn encryption on or off will be added later.

Comes After Launching LinkedIn-Like Hiring Feature

Musk wants ‘X’ to compete with LinkedIn in the professional sphere. He introduced a beta recruiting feature on ‘X’ and expressed his disdain for LinkedIn’s platform. Musk aims to make ‘X’ the “cool” alternative for professional networking and job hunting.

Significant Rebranding Under Musk

Elon Musk completed the rebranding of Twitter to ‘X’ after acquiring the company. As part of this rebrand, Twitter’s iconic blue bird logo was replaced by the letter ‘X.’

This aligns with Musk’s goal of making ‘X’ an “everything app” that allows users to seamlessly engage in social networking, financial services, job hunting and other activities.

Inspired by China’s Super App WeChat

Musk has expressed that his inspiration for the ‘X’ rebrand and product roadmap comes from China’s popular super app WeChat. He aims to replicate WeChat’s model in the Western market through ‘X.’

Focused on Revenue Diversification

The rebranding and new features are part of Musk’s strategy to reduce ‘X’s reliance on advertising revenue. Musk plans to diversify revenue by building a subscriber base, introducing pay models, and offering more tools and services through ‘X.’

The payment branch of ‘X,’ Twitter Payments LLC, recently obtained a currency transmitter license from the US state of Rhode Island. A currency transmitter license in the US is a legal authorization issued by state regulatory authorities that allows a company or individual to engage in the business of transmitting money or value electronically.

The video calling capability marks another step in Musk’s grand vision for ‘X’ to become an all-in-one super app. More features and changes can be expected as Musk continues to shape ‘X’ into his ideal platform.
