BJP collected the biggest sum of donations in 2022–2023 totaling ₹719.858 cr: ADR report

In the fiscal year 2022–2023 (FY), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) received the largest donations, totaling ₹719.858 crore from 7,945 contributors, according to a study published by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). With this, the BJP’s revenue increased by 17.12% over the previous fiscal year (2021–2022), when it was allocated ₹614.626 crore.

The national parties reported raising ₹850.438 crore from 12,167 contributions during the fiscal year 2022–2023. Receiving ₹79.924 crore, the Indian National Congress (INC) came second in comparison. This is a reduction from the preceding FY 2021–22 (-16.27%).


Comparably, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) reported a 2.99% decline in donations (₹1.143 crore) while the CPI(M) reported a 39.56% decrease (₹3.978 crore) in donations.

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) said that it did not receive any donations over ₹20,000 in FY 2022–2023 for the 17th consecutive year.

According to ADR’s state-by-state contribution segmentation, Delhi contributed a total of ₹276.202 crore, followed by ₹160.509 crore from Gujarat and ₹96.273 crore from Maharashtra to the national political parties.

Up to 3,318 corporate/business sectors contributed ₹680.495 crore (80.017% of total donations) to these parties in FY 2022–2023; in contrast, 8,567 individual contributors gave ₹166.621 crore (19.592% of total donations) to these parties.

For the fiscal year 2022–2023, the BJP (₹610.491 crore) received corporate donations more than eight times the sum (₹70.004 crore) reported by all other national parties.

As the largest party contributor, Prudent Electoral Trust gave BJP (256.25 crore) and AAP (90 lakh) a combined ₹257.15 crore, the report stated.

Over the course of FY 2022–23, national parties received ₹91.701 crore in donations, a 12.09% increase over the previous fiscal year 2021–2022.
