Balkaur Singh, the father of late Punjabi musician and politician Sidhu Moosewala, is expected to contest the election from the Bathinda constituency in Punjab in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, which is a noteworthy occurrence. On Wednesday, April 24, 2024, Balkaur Singh declared his intention to contest the election as an independent in the Bathinda seat for the Lok Sabha Elections of 2024. The last and seventh phase of the polls is scheduled for June 1 in Bathinda.

After being shot in May 2022, Sidhu Moosewala, a well-known figure in Punjabi music and politics, left behind a lasting cultural legacy and a brief but significant political career. Since then, Balkaur Singh, his father, has spoken out for justice for his son and decided to enter politics himself.

Given the circumstances surrounding his son’s death and popularity, Balkaur Singh’s entry into the contest is certain to attract a lot of attention. There will be a tough campaign in Bathinda, with notable members of the major parties fighting for the seat. Candidates are Gurmeet Singh Khudian of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Jeet Mohinder Sidhu of the Congress, Parampal Kaur of the BJP, and Harsimrat Kaur Badal of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). Even with the public’s empathy and emotional support, Balkaur Singh still has to fight powerful political institutions.

His choice to run as an independent candidate highlights the difficulties he will face because he will require a sizable number of supporters to have a meaningful influence. Recent reports of harassment by the Punjab government regarding the authenticity of their newborn child have put Balkaur Singh and his wife Charan Kaur on the public front.

Balkaur Singh has made a public plea to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, requesting fair treatment and permission for the family to finish their child’s required medical care.

In December 2021, His son Sidhu Moosewala became a member of the Indian National Congress (INC). He contested from the Mansa seat of the Punjab Legislative Assembly in 2022, but he was not successful.
