Minister mandates display of Kannadiga staff numbers by MNCs
The government has created an app allowing citizens to file complaints if Kannada is disrespected.
On February 20, Karnataka’s Kannada & Culture Minister announced in the Legislative Council that multinational companies (MNCs) operating in the state would be required to display the number of Kannadiga they employ on notice boards at their premises. This decision was made during a discussion on the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development (Amendment) Bill, which mandates 60% of signage to be in Kannada.
During the discussion, the minister emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting the Kannada language in all sectors, ensuring adequate representation of local talent by requiring MNCs to display the number of Kannadigas they employ.
To enforce language requirements, the minister mentioned potential consequences, including the cancellation of licenses for non-compliance. The government is also taking steps to ensure that judgments are delivered in Kannada and is encouraging the use of Kannada by advocates.
In addition, the minister highlighted the upcoming launch of the government’s ‘Kannada Kavalu’ mobile app, enabling citizens to file complaints against individuals or organizations acting against the interests of Kannada.
Moreover, the minister assured that the government would consider withdrawing cases filed against pro-Kannada workers engaged in vandalism and the removal of English signboards from shops and commercial establishments.
