Teenager from Assam designs sensor-enabled shoes for visually impaired

The sensor on the shoe will raise a buzzer as soon as an obstacle is detected in its vicinity.

With an aim to help visually impaired individuals, Ankurit Karmakar resident of Karimganj District in Assam has designed a sensor-enabled smart shoe that will help these individuals from keeping themselves at a relatively safe distance from any obstacle while walking.

The Class 9th student said, “I made this smart shoe for blind people. If there is an obstacle in their way, then the sensor of the shoe will detect the obstacle and the buzzer will sound an alert.” He added, “When the buzzer rings, the visually impaired person will be able to hear it and therefore can become alert and accordingly act in a certain manner to avoid the obstacle.”

Karmakar said that to undertake this innovation he was inspired by an individual from the United Kingdom who had designed a similar type of shoe.

The teenager who is a student of Rowland’s Memorial High School in Karimganj wishes to become a scientist one day and said that if he is successful in his endeavour of becoming a scientist, he will do more of such work that will help people and make their lives easier.
