ISRO helps Bengal Governor to tackle ragging on campuses

CV Ananda Bose reached out to the Chairman of ISRO, aiming to pinpoint the right technology to tackle the issue at hand.

In an ambitious move to tackle the menace of ragging on college campuses, the Bengal Governor is now turning to space technology for a solution. This is the vision of West Bengal Governor, CV Ananda Bose, who has reached out to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for assistance. The goal? To identify a suitable technological solution to combat this issue, according to a statement issued by Raj Bhavan.

Just this month, a tragic incident at Jadavpur University sparked widespread outrage. A first-year undergraduate student lost their life, allegedly due to ragging and sexual harassment in a hostel. This incident further emphasizes the urgent need to address this issue.

Key Points:

  • The Bengal Governor’s approach to ISRO for technology input.
  • The aim to curb ragging with the help of advanced technology.
  • The potential impact of this initiative on campus safety and inclusivity.

“CV Ananda Bose, the respected Governor of West Bengal and Chancellor of the universities, has taken a proactive step. He’s reached out to the Chairman of ISRO, seeking their expertise in identifying the right technology to effectively contain and eradicate the ragging menace on university campuses,” the statement read, issued on Thursday night.

But that’s not all. Mr. Bose has also been in talks with a Hyderabad-based firm concerning this issue.

“We’re exploring various avenues. The aim is to develop a suitable technology solution using a combination of tools, including video analytics, image matching, automatic target recognition, and remote sensing,” the governor shared in the statement.

Meanwhile, in connection with the tragic death of the undergraduate student at Jadavpur University, a total of 13 individuals, comprising both current and former students, have been arrested.

This news comes as a testament to the increasing dependence on science and technology to address societal issues, ensuring that our campuses are safer and more inclusive.
