Travel to be revolutionised in India with all-electric air taxis

InterGlobe Enterprises, a majority shareholder in the low-cost airline IndiGo, has recently announced a groundbreaking partnership with US-based Archer Aviation Inc. The aim is to introduce and operate an all-electric air taxi service in India. InterGlobe’s group managing director, Rahul Bhatia, expressed enthusiasm about this venture, highlighting the company’s track record in providing safe, efficient, and affordable transportation to millions of Indians over the past two decades.

Archer Aviation, a company listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), specializes in designing and developing electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for urban air mobility networks. The collaboration between InterGlobe and Archer aims to revolutionize transportation in India by offering a sustainable, low-noise, and cost-competitive electric air taxi service. This move aligns with the growing need for innovative solutions to combat urban congestion, particularly in India’s largest cities.

Archer’s CEO and founder, Adam Goldstein, emphasized India’s significance in the eVTOL aircraft sector, citing the country’s vast population and the congestion challenges faced by its major cities. The partnership aims to address these issues by introducing Archer’s all-electric Midnight aircraft to the Indian market. The Midnight aircraft is designed to provide a transformative transportation solution, with the potential to significantly reduce commute times in congested urban areas.

Recognizing the urgency of addressing urban congestion, the World Bank projects a doubling of the global urban population by 2050. Short road commutes in major cities are expected to take up to two hours, making sustainable and efficient transportation solutions crucial. In this context, the InterGlobe-Archer partnership seeks to offer a viable alternative that enhances urban mobility and contributes to a greener and more efficient living environment.

The collaboration envisions working with local business partners in India to operate Archer’s aircraft, develop vertiport infrastructure, and train personnel, including pilots. Additionally, plans are in place to secure financing for up to 200 of Archer’s Midnight aircraft to support operations in India. This strategic approach emphasizes the commitment to a comprehensive and sustainable implementation of electric air taxis in the country.

Archer’s Midnight aircraft, a four-passenger electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle, is designed for rapid back-to-back flights with minimal charge time between them. The goal is to enable passengers to complete a 27 km journey from Connaught Place to Gurugram in approximately 7 minutes, a stark contrast to the 60 to 90 minutes typically required by car. This efficiency is expected to be a key selling point for the electric air taxi service, providing a faster and more convenient alternative to traditional ground transportation.

Looking beyond passenger transport, the partnership also aims to explore various applications of electric aircraft in India. These include cargo and logistics services, medical and emergency services, as well as private company and charter services. This diversified approach underscores the versatility and potential impact of electric air taxis across different sectors in the Indian market.
