Dinner with PM Modi; Biden’s plan following his arrival in India

Three months after Modi paid a State visit to the US, this is Biden's first trip to India as US President.

US President Joe Biden is scheduled to participate in a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi following his arrival in New Delhi for the 18th G20 Summit on Friday. This meeting would be followed by a dinner hosted for him at 7:30 p.m., Lok Kalyan Marg, the Prime Minister’s official residence. The US President is anticipated to arrive in India around 7 p.m.

US First Lady Jill Biden held a dinner for Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House on his visit to the US in June, and this is regarded as a reciprocal gesture.

It is unlikely that the leaders will announce any new initiatives; instead, they will concentrate on implementing the commitments made during PM Modi’s state visit to the US in June and reviewing the initiatives launched in Washington.

Cooperation in space, supply chain coordination for semiconductors, and innovative partnerships are some of the main topics on the agenda.

To challenge China’s predominance and wrest it away from Russia, the US is eager to strengthen its ties with India.

Considering that the US-led G7 and the Russia-China group are at odds over the Russia-Ukraine issue, both leaders are anticipated to speak about the polarisation throughout the G20.

Finding an agreement would lead to a joint declaration, which the US has warned was improbable at this summit, guessing that Russia and China wouldn’t sign it. This gives the issue more relevance.

Biden is expected to emphasise on how the US can assist emerging nations and advance important goals for Americans, from technology to the environment.

The US has backed India’s request to make the African Union a permanent member of the G20. Biden will take part in the weekend’s official G20 sessions following the bilateral discussions.

Fast-tracking the transaction for General Electric (GE) jet engines that was announced during PM Modi’s state visit is one of the primary topics on the agenda for their bilateral meetings.

The US Congress granted approval for the GE and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) agreement for the production of GE F-414 jet engines.

The development of this agreement will be discussed by the two leaders.

Additionally, both presidents are likely to talk about ways to improve business collaborations, supply chains for semiconductors, and space cooperation.

An agreement for cooperation in these areas has already been inked between the two nations. The leaders may also talk about easing visa requirements and student academic programmes.

Furthermore, they reportedly would assess the status of the announcements of the US consulates in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad as well as the Indian diplomatic station in Seattle.

According to sources, PM Modi will attend more than 15 bilateral meetings over the course of three days, ending on Sunday.

He will also have meetings with the presidents of Bangladesh and Mauritius this evening at his Lok Kalyan Marg residence.

In addition to the G20 discussions tomorrow, PM Modi will have one-on-one meetings with the UK, Japan, Germany, and Italy.

The Prime Minister will have lunch with Emmanuel Macron, the president of France, on the last day of the G20 summit. According to sources, he will have a pull-aside meeting with Canada and bilateral meetings with Comoros, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, the EU/EC, Brazil, and Nigeria.
