A 19-year-old residing in Kota, who was medical aspiring disappears to become a doctor has unexpectedly been reported missing after his NEET exam. The student, Rajendra Prasad Meena, had spent the previous three years studying at the Kota coaching hub for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). On May 5, 2024, Rajendra showed up for his NEET exam. He was last seen the day after.

He wrote a note to his family that he no longer wanted to pursue his education and that he wanted to spend five years away from home. In the WhatsApp chat, he also stated that he had Rs 8,000 with him and that he would get in touch with his family once a year.

The family was shocked and alarmed when they received the message. The mother of Rajendra, who hasn’t eaten since the day he vanished, has been especially devastated. In addition to pleading for his son’s safe return and promising not to scold him upon his return, his father, Jagadish Prasad Meena, has filed a missing person report. Although the police have set up squads to find Rajendra, they haven’t been successful in doing so yet.

Kota is well known for its tough coaching centers that get students ready for a range of admission examinations. However, the high standards and extreme pressure have frequently been a source of worry, as seen by the numerous instances of stress and mental health problems among students that have surfaced.  

Such acts may have complicated and varied motivations. In this instance, the student, Rajendra Prasad Meena, indicated that he needed a vacation from his academics and the stress that came with them by expressing a wish to leave his current life behind for five years. He stated that he intended to return after five years, which suggests that the purpose is a personal quest or a trip of self-discovery based on what can be deduced from his message.

With 26 coaching students ending their own lives in 2023, Kota saw the highest number of student suicides ever. In 2022, there were fifteen student suicides. The numbers were 18 in 2019, 20 in 2018, 7 in 2017, 17 in 2016, and 18 in 2015, according to figures from prior years.

These figures demonstrate the extreme pressure that Kota students endure. Kota is a major location for students preparing for competitive exams such as JEE and NEET. Along with studies, the students struggle with hectic schedules, fierce competition, the weight of family expectations, and homesickness.
