Delhi on high alert as massive farmer protest to be held on 14 Feb, state borders sealed
Internet shut in several districts of Haryana, UP as 400 farmer unions unite.
Mobile internet connectivity has been suspended in seven districts as the BJP-led Haryana government gears up to block the farmers’ march to Delhi on Tuesday. The Manohar Lal Khattar government has issued a notification, saying dongle services provided on mobile phones, will remain suspended and only voice calls would go through.
The farmers are demanding a law to guarantee Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their produce and pension and insurance schemes. More than 200 organisations are part of the protest.
Mobile internet services have been suspended in Ambala, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Jind, Hisar, Fatehabad and Sirsa districts till Tuesday night.
The planned protest is a grim reminder of the farmers’ protest in 2020 which went on for a year on the Delhi border as this time too, farmers are coming to the national capital with all essential items, ration, and cylinders.
To stop the farmers from coming to Delhi, a delegation of three ministers including Piyush Goyal was sent to Chandigarh to talk to the farmer leaders. The leaders said a second round of meeting was promised but Delhi Chalo march will take place.
Farmers are protesting to secure a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP), put into action the recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission, provide pensions for both farmers and farm labourers, grant relief for farm debts, withdraw police cases, and seek justice for the victims of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
