Bihar Education Minister equates Hindu scripture with ‘potassium cyanide’

Comments Draw Mixed Reactions from Political Parties and Renew Debate on Religious Sensitivities.

Bihar’s Education Minister, Chandra Shekhar, has ignited a fresh controversy by comparing ancient scriptures like the Ramcharitmanas to ‘potassium cyanide’. He made these comments during a function, and a video of his speech quickly spread on social media. The minister claimed that even prominent figures like Hindi writer Nagarjuna and socialist thinker Ram Manohar Lohia had criticized the Ramcharitmanas for containing regressive thoughts. This is not the first time Chandra Shekhar has made controversial statements, as he faced similar controversy earlier in the year.

Comparing Ancient Texts to Potassium Cyanide

Chandra Shekhar acknowledged that there are valuable elements in scriptures but used a striking analogy. He likened these texts to a feast where 55 dishes are served, but if you add a sprinkle of potassium cyanide, the entire food becomes unfit for consumption. In essence, he suggested that these scriptures, while containing some good aspects, also have harmful elements.

Response to Caste Discrimination and RSS Chief’s Statements

The Education Minister also noted that his previous remarks on caste discrimination had led to abuse and threats of physical violence. However, he pointed out that similar concerns expressed by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat did not draw the same negative reactions. He highlighted the need for a caste census to establish an egalitarian society where dignity is ensured for those performing tasks like cleaning gutters.

Mixed Reactions from Political Parties

Chandra Shekhar’s comments drew mixed reactions from various political parties. His own party, RJD, distanced itself from his remarks. The JD(U), an ally, criticized the minister for insulting the Sanatana Dharma, a term referring to the eternal religion encompassing Hinduism and its various philosophies. They called for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to address the issue. The BJP, a rival party, also criticized the Education Minister’s comments, expressing concern that he had disrespected the Sanatana Dharma. They questioned the silence of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on this matter.

Importance of Respecting All Religions

The JD(U) emphasized the importance of respecting all faiths as mandated by the Constitution. They criticized individuals who make statements solely for publicity and called for a more responsible approach when discussing religious matters. The RJD also issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to social justice while emphasizing the need to avoid statements that could hurt religious sentiments.

In conclusion, Bihar’s Education Minister’s controversial comments comparing ancient scriptures to ‘potassium cyanide’ have sparked a debate. He argued that these texts, while having some valuable aspects, also contain harmful elements. His remarks received both support and criticism from different political parties, highlighting the importance of respecting all religions and handling sensitive topics with care.
