Gulam Nabi Azad, former Rajya Sabha MP, has sung praises for Prime Minister Narender Modi during the function organised by the Gujjar Desh Charitable Trust in Jammu. Azad said that the PM is upfront and honest about himself.  He doesn’t shy away from calling himself a “chaiwala “ or tea seller. He also mentioned that despite the political differences, he identifies himself with Modi as he too hails from a village. The Senior Congress leader was also awarded the Sher e Gujjar award during the event.

These words also seem indicative of the way Congress party members are currently being treated. Azad along with other dissenting members, also known as G-23, has raised concern about the party’s condition. However, they haven’t spoken ill of the party’s president so far.

These G-23 leaders, fed up with the party’s top authority, have demanded a change in the internal system. Congress Party is infamous for favouring nepotism. A prime example of this is that the head of the party is always from the Nehru – Gandhi family. This makes it difficult for the outside members to move up the ranks and go about making decisions in the party.

The rebellions in the party want a fair internal election to bring competent members to a leadership position. The agitation force came to notice after the fiasco that went down in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.  The downfall in Puducherry was also the result of Congress’s incapability to unite their party together.

This month Prime Minister Modi praised Azad for his leadership as the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha. He said that the person who will replace him has a tough competition. Modi even gave an emotional speech as he bid adieu to Azad when Azad retired from the Rajya Sabha.

Recently, there has been some speculations about Gulam Nabi Azad joining BJP. However, he refuted those rumours by saying that he would join BJP when the snow turns black in Kashmir.
