Apex Court takes lead for inclusive infrastructure and sexuality sensitisation for LGBTQIA+ community at its court

A statement from the Supreme Court added that Menaka Guruswamy, a senior advocate, has been inducted as a member of Gender Sensitisation and Internal Complaints Committee (GSICC).

In a sententious initiative, the Supreme Court has initiated landmark steps for inclusive infrastructure and sexuality sensitisation of LGBTQIA+ community at the Supreme Court.

Under the directions and guidance of Dr Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud, the Chief Justice of India, the Apex Court has taken the lead to create nine universal rest rooms at different locations in the main buildings as well as the the additional building complex of the Supreme Court.

“A proposal for broadening of the scope of the Gender Sensitization and Internal Complaints Committee to Gender and Sexuality Sensitization and Internal Complaints Committee, as requested by an advocate from the community, is also under active consideration,” the statement further read.

The statement added that Menaka Guruswamy, a senior advocate, has been inducted as a member of Gender Sensitisation and Internal Complaints Committee (GSICC). Furthermore, the online appearance portal launched earlier this year had also been made gender neutral.

“Suitable amendments in regulations keeping pace with the changing times and evolving needs of the society and the institution are being envisaged,” added the statement.

The spatial developments are aimed at sensitisation towards inclusion of the LGBTQIA+ community to ensure a dignified work environment at the apex court.
