Birthday pilgrimage turns fatal: Andhra woman and daughter killed in US accident

Relatives reported that Gitanjali's 5-year-old daughter, Hanika, perished immediately at the scene, while Gitanjali, gravely wounded, was flown to a hospital where she was subsequently pronounced dead by medical personnel.

A woman from Andhra Pradesh, living as an NRI in Portland, USA, and her daughter were killed in a tragic accident while on their way to a temple for her 32nd birthday prayers. Originally from Konakanchi in Krishna district, Kamatham Gitanjali was declared brain dead following the Sunday morning incident.

According to police, Gitanjali was travelling south on South Meridian Road and did not halt at a stop sign, leading her Ford into a collision with another vehicle. The other car, going west on Highway 211, was driven by 18-year-old Benjamin Hernandez-Lopez from Canby.

Gitanjali’s 5-year-old daughter, Hanika, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, according to family members. Gitanjali, who sustained severe injuries, was airlifted to a hospital where she was later declared deceased by medical professionals.

Her husband, Naresh, and their son, Braman, were also injured in the accident and are currently receiving medical treatment in the hospital. Braman suffered a broken leg and is undergoing surgical treatment.

Gitanjali and her husband, both software engineers, had been residing in the US for about a decade.
