After Haryana, Uttarakhand eyes opportunity to send workers to Israel

This comes as a response to Israel's call for help to refill their decreasing construction industry workforce.

The government of Uttarakhand is mulling over a proposal that could see workers from the state setting sail to Israel. This comes as a response to Israel’s call for help to refill their decreasing construction industry workforce.

“The department is currently examining the viability of sending construction workers from our state to Israel,” says R Meenakshi Sundaram, secretary of the state labour department.

Interestingly, the idea isn’t entirely fresh. Haryana, another Indian state has already started inviting applications for a whopping 10,000 construction jobs in Israel. The jobs command an attractive monthly wage of around Rs 1.34 lakh. Inspired and motivated, the Uttarakhand government is exploring a similar path of sending state workers to the Middle-Eastern country.

Uttarakhand’s Current Construction Industry

According to Sundaram, “In comparison to other states, the number of construction workers in Uttarakhand is less, as most of them working here are from outside the state.” These workers represent a big chunk of the population that could benefit from the proposed Israel opportunity.

“We are exploring the possibilities for those hailing from our state. If it’s feasible, we too will strive to send them to Israel as it would offer exposure as well as better remuneration,” Sundaram added.

And it’s not just the labour department that’s considering this proposal. Saurabh Bahuguna, state minister for skill development, affirmed that they are also investigating. There’s a hint that the department of skill development could soon adopt a similar approach. This move could elevate career opportunities for many more people in Uttarakhand.

Why This Proposal Matters

  1. Employment Opportunities: If the proposal goes through, it could open up a wide range of employment opportunities for construction workers in Uttarakhand. It comes at a time when job creation is crucial.
  2. Increased Remuneration: The potential pay of Rs 1.34 lakh per month is significantly higher compared to what an average construction worker in Uttarakhand earns.
  3. Exposure and Experience: Working in Israel would provide valuable international exposure and experience to the state’s workers.
