Home ministry accused of highest number of corruption complaints, followed by railways and banks

In total, 1,15,203 such complaints were received for all categories of officers and employees across central government departments and organisations in 2022, the report elaborated.

The Central Vigilance Commission which works as the pinnacle body, responsible for practicing general superintendence and vigilance in administration, has recently published its annual report. The report clearly mentions that the highest number of corruption complaints filed against the Union home ministry, followed by the employees working in railways and banks.

A total of 1,15,203 complaints were registered against all grades of officers and employees across central government departments and organizations in 2022. Wherein, 46,643 complaints were against the employees of the home ministry last year, 10,580 were received by the railways and 8,129 by banks, according to the report.

Out of the total complaints against home ministry employees, 23,919 were disposed of and 22,724 were pending disposal — 19,198 pending for more than three months, it said.

The employees working in the home ministry are IAS and IPS officers as senior officials. The Union Home Secretary draws salary at the pay level 17 of 7th Central Pay Commission i.e. Rupees 2,25,000 plus other allowances applicable per month which is equivalent to a Chief Secretary’s salary.

The Ministry of Home Affairs extends manpower and financial support, guidance and expertise to the State Governments for the maintenance of security, peace and harmony without trampling upon the constitutional rights of the States.

Whereas a total of 9,663 complaints were registered against the railways, while 917 were pending disposal — nine for more than three months, the report, which was made public recently, affirmed. Indian Railways falls under the ownership of Ministry of Railways, government of India, yet fails to maintain law and orders, with frequent incidences of corruption at all levels, including senior officials. Some visible corruptions include- non-procurement of electrical items as per specifications and not sufficient quantities, the difference of fair, civil constructions and the list goes on.

The Banks had a total of 7,762 corruption complaints filed against it, out of which 367 were pending — 78 for more three months.

The CVC report further mentioned 987 complaints against those working in insurance companies, 970 against employees of the personnel, public grievances and pensions ministry.

Taking home ministry in consideration, for it being highly accused of corruption, the working professionals consist of IAS and IPS officers, while such government officers are mostly honest in their respective fields, especially during their initial years but gradually fall into the pit of corruption and heavy bribes. This is not an uncommon incidence as Indian citizens are used to such wrongful acts, which should be heavily criticized. To tackle corruption, it is essential to implement rigorous systems of checks and promote a culture of accountability and whistleblowing, which shall result in smooth functioning and timely execution of government policies, maintaining law and order and working religiously for the betterment of the nation.
