G20 extends permanent membership to African Union: A game-changer for India

Great news on the global front! In a crucial international forum for the governments and central bank governors from 19 countries and the European Union, G20 has reportedly agreed to grant permanent membership to the African Union. This move, reported by Bloomberg, was unveiled on Thursday (September 7), according to insiders. This will elevate the AU to a status similar to that of the European Union (EU), from its current standing as an “invited international organization.

” Interestingly, it was in June that our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, penned a proposal to the G20 members, advocating for full, permanent membership for the AU. And guess where he suggested this groundbreaking change? At the impending G20 summit, right here in our capital city, New Delhi.

The Group of Twenty (G20), which collectively represents 80% of the world’s economic output, recently decided to extend a permanent membership to the African Union (AU), a continental body consisting of 55 member states in Africa. This decision is a significant milestone in global diplomacy and international relations.

And the support for the AU’s membership is widespread. Countries such as Germany, Brazil, and Canada are also backing this move, according to the Bloomberg report. 

For the uninitiated, the G20 is an international forum that brings together the world’s major economies. Its members are a mix of the world’s largest advanced and emerging economies, representing about two-thirds of the world’s population, 85% of global gross domestic product and over 75% of global trade.
