The trailer of Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi’s Dil Bechara was released today and fans are experiencing bittersweet emotions after watching their favourite actor on the screen. On one hand, it is a delight to witness Sushant Singh Rajput’s innocence and charm on the screen. On the other hand, we know that this is the last film of the actor.

Sushant Singh Rajput died by suicide at the age of 34 on June 14, leaving the entire nation in shock. His death also re-opened several debates about nepotism, bullying and favouritism in Bollywood.

Before Dil Bechara releases, here is all you need to know about the film:

  • Dil Bechara was earlier titled as Kizie Aur Manny. Debutante Sanjana Sanghi plays the role of Kizie in the film while Sushant Singh Rajput plays the role of Manny, her lover. The title of the film was changed in February 2019.
  • The film was earlier supposed to hit the silver screens in November 2019 but the release had been deferred to May 8, 2020. However, due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, the film could not be released in theatres. Finally, it was announced that the film will be available on Disney+Hotstar from July 24, 2020.
  • Dil Bechara is the official Hindi remake of 2014 super-hit film, The Fault in our Stars. The Hollywood film is based on the book with the same title written by John Green.
  • The Fault in our Stars tells the story of two teenagers, sixteen-year-old Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters, who are both suffering from cancer. Shailene Woodley played the role of Hazel in the film while Ansel Elgort played her boyfriend, Augustus, also referred to as Gus.
  • In the film as well as the book, Hazel and Gus first meet at a weekly support group formed to help cancer patients. Hazel is reluctant to join the group but is forced to do so by her parents. She then meets Gus, and her life changes in ways she could never imagine. Hazel is shown as suffering from thyroid cancer that has spread to her lungs. As a result, she has to use an oxygen cylinder to be able to breathe.
  • On the other hand, Gus is a delightful teenager who has a prosthetic leg after losing his leg to bone cancer. However, he says that he is now cured of the disease.
  • Gradually, Hazel and Gus start talking on texts and spend more time together. Finally, the two fall in love. The two then exchange their favourite books and ask each other to read it.
  • When Gus asks Hazel about the abrupt ending of her favourite book, she reveals that she has written dozens of letters to the author but he never responds. She then expresses her desire to meet the author of her favourite book, Van Houten, who resides in Amsterdam.
  • Gus tracks down the author in Amsterdam and leaves a message with the assistant, expressing his desire to visit. This inspires Grace to drop an Email of her own. After facing some struggles, the two teenagers finally embark on a journey from Indianapolis, US to Amsterdam to meet Houten. The trip, however, turns out to be more about revelations than adventures.
  • Towards the film’s climax, Gus’s cancer returns and spreads through his body which ultimately leads to his death. After the funeral, Hazel receives a letter from Van Houten, written by Gus. The letter turns out to be a eulogy written by the late teenager for Hazel. The heart-wrenching climax made many cry in theatres.

AR Rahman is the music director of Dil Bechara. After the trailer release, he took to Twitter and shared the names of the film’s songs.

The film will release on July 24 on Disney+ Hotstar. The streaming giant has announced that it will be available for free viewing to subscribers as well as non-subscribers, as a tribute.
