Tamil Nadu leads India’s rise in electronic exports

The Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu's contribution accounts for nearly a third (31%) of those exports.

In recent years, India has seen substantial growth in the export of electronic goods assembled within its borders. From April to October 2023, the total export of electronic goods from India reached an impressive figure of $15.48 billion, according to government data. The Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu’s contribution is particularly noteworthy, accounting for nearly a third (31%) of those exports. Indeed, Tamil Nadu’s electronics exports, valued at $4.78 billion, cement its place as the country’s leader in this field.

Solid Growth in Electronics Exports

Data recorded by NIRYAT (National Import Export Record for the Yearly Analysis of Trade), a department under India’s Ministry of Trade and Industry, indicates that Tamil Nadu’s electronics exports saw an upward trend. For the fiscal year 2022-23, the export volume of electronic goods from the state amounted to $5.37 billion, reinforcing Tamil Nadu’s leading role in India’s electronics export industry.

Setting a New Benchmark

In the current fiscal year (April-October), Tamil Nadu has already achieved 90% of its previous year’s total, a substantial $4.78 billion in electronic exports. If this trend continues, the state may well surpass its previous year’s total and set a new benchmark by the end of the fiscal year in April 2024.

A Strategic Leader

As per Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Industries, the projected electronics exports by the end of the fiscal year may reach $8 billion, nearly twice as much as the second-highest state in terms of electronic exports. This remarkable feat is due to the strategic policies, the skilled workforce, solid infrastructure, and the governance model in place in the state.

The Global Investors Meet: A Confluence of Opportunities

In January 2024, Tamil Nadu plans to host a Global Investors Meet. Scheduled on the 7th and 8th of the month, this event aims to attract high-tech industries and stimulate investments that could potentially result in the creation of a large number of jobs. Set to bring together participants from various sectors, such as industrialists, trade bodies of Micro, Small and Medium Industries (MSMIs), agriculturists, weavers, and artisans. The guiding theme of the meet will be ‘Towards a Resilient Economy, Sustainable Development, and Inclusive Growth’.
