At a three-day conclave commencing on Monday, top Indian Navy commanders will conduct a thorough assessment of India’s maritime security problems and measures to improve tri-services coordination in the face of growing Chinese military assertiveness in the Indian Ocean region.

Top brass of the Indian Navy will examine significant operational, material, logistical, training, and administrative tasks carried out during the preceding six months.

The conference will also discuss the direction to be taken in the upcoming months, according to officials.

Maritime security is a broad word used to group concerns in the maritime domain that are frequently connected to national security, the marine environment, economic development, and human security. This includes not only the oceans of the world but also regional seas, territorial waters, rivers, and ports, where the seas serve as a “stage for geopolitical power projection, interstate warfare, or militarised disputes, as a source of specific threats like piracy, or colonialism to globalisation.

The naval commanders are expected to interact with the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Anil Chauhan, Army Chief Gen. Manoj Pande, and Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari, according to sources.

During the conference, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will address and engage with the Commanders.  The conference also gives naval commanders and senior government officials a chance to interact regularly, which will advance a number of interministerial initiatives aimed at creating a maritime environment that is safe and secure and vital to the nation’s overall economic growth.

The Navy stated that the conference will conduct a thorough examination of the Navy’s operational preparedness, paying particular attention to the functioning of the weapons and sensors on the naval platforms. According to the Navy, “The commanders will also review the ongoing naval projects with a focus on enhancing indigenisation through ‘Make in India’ in consonance with the vision of achieving complete ‘Aatmanirbharta’ by 2047.”

Indian Navy’s operations spanned from the Atlantic to the Pacific

It said that throughout the previous six months, there had been an “intense operational tempo as the Indian Navy’s operations spanned from the Atlantic to the Pacific”.

The conference and embedded conversations with the National Security Advisor (NSA), Chiefs of the Indian Army, and Chiefs of the Indian Air Force will also be conducted to examine the operational environment and discuss the topic of Tri-Service synergy. As part of “Operation Cauvery” to evacuate Indian people from Sudan and “Operation Karuna” to conduct humanitarian relief efforts in Myanmar following Cyclone Mocha, Indian Naval ships were the first to arrive on the scene.
