Karnataka man loses Rs 1.5 crores in online betting, Wife dies by suicide

According to the father of the woman, the duo got married in 2020 and it was after a year that his daughter got to know that her husband was into betting

A piece of shocking news has come to light after a 24-year-old woman killed herself by suicide after her husband lost Rs 1.5 crores because of his habit of online betting leaving behind the husband and their child. The incident came to light after the father of the woman told the cops that his daughter was under pressure from money lenders, who would come to their home because of the husband’s debt.

According to the father, the duo got married in 2020 and it was after a year that his daughter got to know that her husband, Darshan was into betting on cricket games and it was this habit that brought the couple under pressure from money lenders. The woman in her suicide note, blamed the lenders for mental harassment that led her to take the extreme step.

Based on the complaint, a case of abetment to suicide under IPC 306 has been filed against the 13 suspects, three of whom — identified as Shivu, Girish and Venkatesh — have been arrested, while the others are still at large.

The woman’s father, Venkatesh while speaking to Times of India, said that Darshan had repaid almost all of the money he had borrowed and only needed to pay another 54 lakhs.

In his complaint, Venkatesh said: “My son-in-law is innocent. He was not willing to get into cricket betting, but the suspects forced him, saying it was an easy way to get rich. They promised to finance his betting activities against some blank cheques as security.”

“Darshan did wager some money in online cricket betting between 2021 and 2023, but lost all of it,” Venkatesh added, saying: “The suspects demanded Darshan return their money immediately”.
