Disturbing footage from Pune surfaced on social media, showing a man wielding a machete and chasing a woman with the intent to assault her. The incident sparked widespread outrage among social media users, who expressed their concern and condemnation. The woman was rescued by residents and the accused was handed over to the police.
According to the CCTV footage, the victim and her friend were riding a two-wheeler when they encountered the accused walking on the road and engaging in conversation with the victim. The situation escalated when the man riding the two-wheeler confronted the accused, but the latter takes out a machete from his bag and starts attacking the man before chasing after the woman.
The woman, wearing a salwar and suit with a bag on her back, was seen running across the street with the man, dressed in a shirt and trousers and wearing slippers, chasing after her. The footage showed him striking her on the back, causing her to fall face first. Despite her attempt to get up, the man continued to attack her, as captured in the video.
In response, the local residents intervened by throwing objects at the assailant in an effort to repel him. Eventually, they successfully restrained him and handed him over to the police.
The Pune Police have registered a case against the accused under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code, and an investigation is currently underway, as confirmed by Sandeep Gill, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Pune.
The accused has been identified as 22-year-old Shantanu Laxman Jadhav, residing in Mulshi, while the identity of the 19-year-old victim has been withheld by the police. Notably, the accused and the victim were former classmates. The incident occurred when the woman declined to engage in conversation with the accused while riding the motorbike with her friend.
The police reported that the victim suffered injuries on her head and hand during the incident. However, after receiving medical treatment, she was discharged from the hospital.
According to the victim’s mother, the attacker had been harassing her daughter prior to the incident. She stated that they had even lodged a complaint with the attacker’s father, yet despite this, he attempted to kill their daughter.
