Simulation reveals one personality type that should never colonise the planet Mars

Researchers at George Mason University in Virginia, USA, claim to have discovered a personality type that will probably not survive the mission to colonize the red planet.

“But I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo,

What the hell am I doin’ here?
I don’t belong here”

Sounds familiar right? Well, who knew these lines by the famous rock band Radiohead would make literal sense on planet Mars.

Here are some fascinating study results conducted by researchers at George Mason University in Virginia, USA. Computer simulations of a human colony residing on Mars for up to 28 years have been conducted by these researchers, although the study was posted on the pre-print service arXiv, peer review has not yet taken place.

The researchers conducted their investigation under the presumption that the colony was already in place and that power could be created on the Red Planet in addition to local production of food, air, and water.

The colony would receive regular supplies from Earth, according to the model.

Before starting their working days and engaging in social activities, each agent was given unique characteristics.

The ideal population for this colony, according to the experts, would be 22.

The study says, “Establishing a human settlement on Mars is an incredibly complex engineering problem. The inhospitable nature of the Martian environment requires any habitat to be largely self-sustaining.”

“Beyond mining a few basic minerals and water, the colonisers will be dependent on Earth resupply and replenishment of necessities via technological means, [such as] splitting Martian water into oxygen for breathing and hydrogen for fuel,” the study added.

“Beyond the technical and engineering challenges, future colonists will also face psychological and human behaviour challenges. Our goal is to better understand the behavioral and psychological interactions of future Martian colonists.”

The four personality types they have identified are neurotic, reactive, sociable, and agreeable. The simulation took into account interactions between the various personality types in both typical scenarios and unfortunate ones, like as accidents and delays in receiving supplies from Earth. According to the experts, colonists with neurotic personalities were thought to have the lowest survival rates.

Whereas those with pleasant personalities are more likely to be able to handle the ups and downs of life on Mars, according to the experts.

We probably want to be with the appropriate folks if we’re going to be stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Nobody wants to be paired up with someone who is constantly chatting about their obsession with cars or movies, or the ones who can’t sit still, or who might even be completely silent.

Believe it or not, personality traits do have a link with survival rates in adverse conditions and this study is evident enough, but don’t you worry, Earth is a safe haven for all range of personalities, from pleasant to tat bit of weirdos to baddies. And now you know and so, before putting “weirdo” in your Instagram bio, just remember you might simply and sadly be a misfit for the planet Mars, but never for our generous mother Earth.
