Uttarakhand Booming: PM Modi Announces 5G, Tourism Push & More

Prime Minister Modi's interview outlines a vision for a more developed and connected Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand ahead of the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently spoke about the development initiatives underway in the state of Uttarakhand ahead of the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In an interview, the Prime Minister highlighted the focus on boosting tourism, and infrastructure, creating employment opportunities for youth, and promoting horticulture.

Focus on Tourism

A key area of emphasis is tourism, particularly for the Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage circuit. The Prime Minister mentioned the Parvatmala Yojana and the Char Dham Project, which he believes will significantly expand tourism in the state. Improved infrastructure, including roads, railways, ropeways, and airways, is also seen as a major boost for attracting visitors.

Environmental Concerns

It’s important to note that some environmentalists have expressed concerns about the potential impact of increased infrastructure development on the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. The recent situation in Joshimath, where houses developed cracks due to landslides, is a worrying example.

Education and Entrepreneurship

The interview also highlighted initiatives aimed at empowering the youth of Uttarakhand. The government has approved plans to establish IT labs and hostels in 20 colleges across the state. Additionally, an entrepreneurship program is being run in collaboration with the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India, to foster a culture of innovation and business creation.

Religious Tourism and Accessibility

Accessibility to religious sites like Badrinath, Kedarnath, Hemkund Sahib, and Manas Khand has been improved, according to the Prime Minister. This, he claims, has led to an increase in religious tourism. He cited the example of the 2013 Kedarnath natural disaster, highlighting how his government ensured continued access for devotees.

Improved Connectivity

The government is also working on improving connectivity in the state. A new highway project will soon connect Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. Mobile network coverage is also being expanded, with BSNL installing new 4G towers and upgrading existing ones. The Prime Minister even highlighted the availability of 5G services in many areas, including all four Dhams.

Uttarakhand as a Workation and Staycation Destination

The interview concluded with the Prime Minister mentioning Uttarakhand’s growing popularity as a workstation and staycation destination, particularly among young people. This trend suggests that the state is not only attracting tourists but also becoming a preferred location for remote work and leisure getaways.

Prime Minister Modi’s interview outlines a vision for a more developed and connected Uttarakhand. While the focus on tourism and infrastructure expansion is evident, addressing environmental concerns remains crucial for ensuring sustainable growth in the state.
