Deepest metro station in India, Howrah, is set to open in Kolkata

This engineering marvel covers over 5 lakh square feet across four underground floors and is located a startling 35 metres below the surface.

In recent years, Kolkata Metro, India’s pioneering metro network (metro station), has swiftly expanded its scope.

With building work intensifying on current metro developments in the city and its outskirts, Kolkata Metro remains the country’s only metro system controlled and operated by Indian Railways.

In a remarkable milestone, work on the Howrah Metro station is currently in full swing, with the goal of achieving a historic feat.

The Howrah Metro station is expected to become India’s deepest metro station, expanding the depths of Kolkata’s underground transportation. This engineering marvel covers over 5 lakh square feet across four underground floors and is located a startling 35 metres below the surface. When completed, the Howrah Metro station, together with the recently completed Sealdah Metro station, will serve as the principal entryway to the busy city of Kolkata.

This is an essential component of the East-West Metro project, which will connect Howrah and Kolkata. It is expected to carry around 6.7 lakh passengers per day along its full corridor.

Set to open to the public next month

The East-West Corridor Project in Kolkata includes India’s first underwater metro service. Sector V will be linked to Howrah Maidan on the other side of the Hooghly River by the East-West Metro Project. It will cost Rs 8,600 crore to build.

The much-anticipated 4.8-kilometer-long East-West Metro stretch from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade is set to open to the public next month.

Currently, approximately 9.1 km of the East-West Metro line from Salt Lake Sector V to Sealdah are operating.

On November 2, P Uday Kumar Reddy, General Manager of Metro Railway, performed a thorough inspection of the East-West Metro Corridor, generally known as the Green Line, from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade.

Accompanied by VK Srivastava, Principal Chief Engineer of Metro Railway and Managing Director of KMRCL, as well as other senior Metro Railway and KMRCL officials, the General Manager began his inspection journey at the Howrah Maidan Metro station and travelled beneath the Hooghly River to the Esplanade Metro station, all within the confines of a metro train.

The General Manager diligently checked entry and exit gates at various stations, AFC-PC gates, lifts, escalators, and Platform Screen Doors during his inspection, according to Financial Express. He also evaluated the progress of essential components such as the underground sections of the Howrah Maidan, Howrah, Mahakaran, and Esplanade Metro stations, traction substations, power supply systems, and ventilation and air-conditioning infrastructure.

Kolkata Metro’s extension, with its record-breaking depth and seamless connectivity between Howrah and Kolkata, demonstrates the city’s dedication to modernising its public transport infrastructure.

Kolkata residents and commuters may look forward to an even more efficient and comprehensive metro network in the near future as the Howrah Metro station prepares to create history.
