RSS Nagpur headquarters ‘No drone’, ‘No photography’ zone until March 28 | Here’s why

Those who violate the order would face prosecution under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code

The Nagpur police have increased measures to safeguard vital installations from potential drone attacks, declaring the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s (RSS) headquarters in Nagpur’s Mahal area a ‘no-drone’ zone and prohibiting photography and videography of the premises until March 28, citing a potential threat.

In an order issued on January 28 under Section 144 (1) (3) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), Joint Commissioner of Police Aswathi Dorje stated that the RSS headquarters are located in a heavily populated region surrounded by hotels, lodges, and coaching schools. As a result, people passing by could snap pictures and films or use drones to film the headquarters, constituting a possible threat, according to the directive.

“Individuals passing through the vicinity could take pictures and videos or employ drone videography, posing a potential threat to the headquarters. Therefore, I am prohibiting the taking of pictures, videos or drone photography in the area,” the order stated.

Those who violate the order would face prosecution under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (disobedience to an order properly proclaimed by a public officer), the order states. The order will be in place this year from January 29 to March 28.

According to the police sources, security was tightened at the RSS headquarters in Nagpur after a bomb threat call from a an unidentified person was received. “A phone call was received at the Police Control Room at 1 pm. A man threatened to blow up the RSS headquarters in Mahal area with a bomb,” said DCP, Zone III, Gorakh Bhamre, according to news agency PTI

Terrorists have long targeted the RSS headquarters. Three Lashkar-e-Taiba militants were killed by police officers on June 1, 2006, while attempting to infiltrate the building. Since then, a considerable number of armed police officers have been stationed to assure the headquarters’ protection. Simultaneously, police are on high alert for intelligence indicating that Naxals may be using small drones to spy on security troops near the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border.
