India gets its new Chief Justice, NV Ramana

Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana sworn in as the 48th Chief Justice of The Indian Supreme Court.

India gets its new Chief Justice in the form of Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana. He will be the 48th chief justice of the Supreme Court. He was sworn in by President Ram Nath Kovind at a brief ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhawan. The ceremony was also attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu.

He has immense experience under his belt, he was involved in high-profile cases of the Supreme Court such as the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu & Kashmir, restoration of the internet in the Valley, the restoration of the Congress government in Arunachal Pradesh and the Right to Information Act.

Justice Ramana, who took his oath in English, will retire on August 26, 2022. Born on August 27, 1957, in Ponnavaram village of Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district, he enrolled as an advocate on February 10, 1983.

His first big posting come in the year 2000 as the permanent judge in the Andhra Pradesh High Court. He also served as the acting Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh high court for a brief period between March and May 2013. After that, he moved to Delhi as the new Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court in the same year. In just a few months his appointment as the Supreme Court Judge came in February 2014.

He also led the bench which asked former Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis to conduct a floor test where he asked him to prove his majority in the House.
