Following Seema Haider case, Bangladeshi woman arrives in Noida searching for ‘missing’ Indian husband

Bangladeshi woman arrives in Noida with infant Son, searching for 'missing' Indian husband; Claims noida resident married her in Bangladesh before disappearing.

Another strange case of women coming from our neighboring country to find their husband has come to light in Noida. A Bangladeshi woman named Sonia Akhtar has arrived with her infant son, searching for her Indian husband. She claims that he married her and then deserted her in Bangladesh.

Sonia alleges that Saurav Kant Tiwari, a resident of Noida, had gone to Bangladesh for work where they fell in love three years ago. She says Tiwari converted to Islam, married her as per Muslim rituals and lived with her in Dhaka for three years.

After Sonia conceived a child, Tiwari returned to India, promising to come back soon. However, all his phone numbers became unreachable subsequently. Inspired by the recent case of Pakistani woman Seema Haider in Noida, Sonia arrived in India on a tourist visa with her son to trace her husband.

The Noida Police detained Sonia and kept her at a detention center before the women’s cell tried unsuccessfully to mediate between the couple. Sonia insists that either her husband returns with her to Bangladesh or she will continue staying with him in India. This has posed a challenge for the local authorities on how to handle the sensitive matter.

According to Sonia’s account, Tiwari worked in a private company in Bangladesh from January 2017 to December 2021 which is when they met and fell in love. She claims they married in April 2021 as per Islamic practices. After their son was born, Tiwari exited Bangladesh promising to send visas soon.

However, Tiwari has refuted living with Sonia in Bangladesh. He has been accused of already being married in India when he allegedly wedded Sonia.

Sonia has provided the visa and passport details of herself and her son to back her claims. The Noida Police have forwarded the matter to the Women and Child Safety department for further investigation.

This comes just weeks after the controversy surrounding Pakistani woman Seema Haider’s illegal stay in Noida with her Indian partner. The Sonia Akhtar case will test the authorities on how sensitively they can resolve such cross-border marital disputes.
